Amazon has been working on an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s The Power, a sci-fi novel that explores what would happen if women one day found they could electrocute others at will. The pandemic, however, threw a wrench in the show’s production and initial stars Tim Robbins and Leslie Mann exited the series.
Today, Deadline reports that Robbins and Mann’s roles have been recast, with Josh Charles (The Good Wife) and Toni Collette (The Staircase, Nightmare Alley) taking on the parts.
Collette’s character will play Margot Cleary-Lopez, the mayor of Seattle. Charles will play the Washington governor and the antagonist to Collette’s Margot. Here’s the summary of both of these characters, per Deadline:
Margot Cleary-Lopez, Mayor of Seattle, is an authentic and genuinely progressive politician fighting hard for change. She has a sharp tongue, a wicked sense of humor, and a passion to leave the world better than she found it. She is also a devoted mother to three children, including Jos (Auli’I Cravalho), and wife to her husband of 20 years Rob (John Leguizamo). When the Power emerges, Margot is catapulted into the spotlight, opening the door to unimaginable possibilities – both personal and political.
Dandon, Governor of Washington, is the consummate politician. A liberal and a Democrat, Dandon is a skilled political animal; an experienced schmoozer who is great at playing the game – and poised to be the next Senator from the State of Washington. That is, until the emergence of the Power.
Other previously announced cast members—Auli’i Cravalho, John Leguizamo, Eddie Marsan, Ria Zmitrowicz, Toheeb Jimoh, Zrinka Cvitesic, and Ana Ularu—remain attached to the show. No news yet on when The Power will make its way to Prime Video.
